Overview

Children & Nature Network

In 2005, author and Children & Nature Network co-founder Richard Louv published his groundbreaking book, Last Child in the Woods: Saving our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder. He reported that in just a few decades, childhood had moved indoors, disconnected from the natural world. There are many reasons for this, but the impact on children, people and the planet raised dire concerns. Louv called for a New Nature Movement, one that recognized the interconnection of all life on earth, including plants, humans, and other animals. From this call to action, the Children & Nature Network was born.

We believe that the well-being of children and the wild places we love are inextricably linked. And while research tells us that regular time outdoors is essential for children’s healthy development, today’s kids are less connected to nature than ever before.

We also know that longstanding systems of injustice have impacted the design and distribution of green spaces, and call for new policies informed by people who have been impacted by racism and systems of inequity. We are committed to strengthening efforts to advance equity in access to nature.

We support and mobilize leaders, educators, activists, practitioners and parents working to turn the trend of an indoor childhood back out to the benefits of nature–and to increase safe and equitable access to the natural world for all.

Mission

Equitable Access to Nature Everywhere

To increase equitable access to nature so that children–and the natural world–can thrive.

Our Programs

Nature Everywhere Communities

The Nature Everywhere Communities initiative is a collective impact strategy designed to ensure that all children have equitable access to the benefits of nature where they live, learn, and play. By partnering with local government leaders and community organizations, the program helps cities and counties integrate nature-based solutions into their systemic planning. The goal is to move beyond isolated projects and instead create community-wide networks of nature-rich spaces—such as green schoolyards, nature-based early childhood centers, and connected trail systems—that serve as essential infrastructure for healthy child development. To support this mission, the initiative provides a structured framework of technical assistance, peer learning, and research-backed tools. Communities participating in the program receive guidance on identifying "nature deserts" through data mapping and implementing policy changes that prioritize outdoor access for historically marginalized groups. Through this collaborative model, Nature Everywhere Communities empowers local leaders to build more resilient, nature-positive environments that improve the physical health, mental well-being, and academic success of the next generation. The Global Lessons on Greening School Grounds & Outdoor Learning

The Global Lessons on Greening School Grounds & Outdoor Learning initiative is a collaborative project focused on transforming traditional schoolyards into nature-filled spaces for learning, play, and climate resilience. By documenting successful strategies from around the world, the program provides a roadmap for schools to replace asphalt with biodiverse environments that improve student health and academic performance, specifically targeting communities impacted by environmental injustice. For more info - https://www.childrenandnature.org/schoolgroundgreening/ As a global advocacy platform, the initiative connects leaders and practitioners through a shared Global Action Agenda and technical toolkits. It highlights diverse international case studies—such as sustainable playscapes in India and "oasis" schoolyards in France—to demonstrate how green school grounds can serve as essential public infrastructure. Ultimately, the program seeks to mainstream outdoor learning as a universal standard for building more equitable and climate-ready education systems.
