Learning about Ecosystems and Forests (LEAF) program
The Learning about Ecosystems and Forests (LEAF) program is a global initiative by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) that champions outdoor pedagogy and hands-on environmental stewardship. Originally focused on forests, it has expanded to include a variety of ecosystems, encouraging students to use nature as a classroom to understand the critical role these habitats play in ecological integrity. The program follows a structured six-step methodology—including committee formation and action planning—that empowers students to observe, analyze, and protect their local natural surroundings through direct engagement. Beyond its core curriculum, LEAF operates flagship initiatives like the #GenerationRestoration School in partnership with the UN, which mobilizes students to actively restore degraded landscapes. It also offers digital tools like the FEE Academy for teacher training and the LEAF Scrapbook for younger learners, which uses a "Look, Explore, Analyse, and Flourish" framework. By participating in these schemes, schools contribute to global biodiversity goals while fostering a deep, lifelong connection between youth and the natural world.
