Our Programs
IUCN SSC/CEC Social and Behavioural Change (SBC) Task Force
The IUCN SSC/CEC Social and Behavioural Change (SBC) Task Force is a specialized initiative dedicated to bridging the gap between conservation science and the psychological drivers of human action. Recognizing that environmental challenges are often rooted in human behavior, the platform provides a centralized hub for tools, research, and frameworks grounded in the social sciences. Rather than focusing solely on traditional awareness-raising, it emphasizes the application of "Conservation Psychology" to design interventions that effectively motivate individuals and communities to adopt more sustainable practices. The platform serves as a collaborative space where conservationists can access practical resources, such as step-by-step guides for behavior change projects and case studies showcasing successful global strategies. By bringing together experts from the Species Survival Commission (SSC) and the Commission on Education and Communication (CEC), the initiative fosters a community of practice that promotes evidence-based communication. Its ultimate goal is to empower conservation professionals to move beyond simply sharing information and instead create measurable, positive shifts in how society interacts with the natural world. IUCN Task Force on Citizen Science
The IUCN Task Force on Citizen Science is a specialized initiative within the CEC that promotes public participation as a vital tool for biodiversity conservation and scientific monitoring. By integrating community-led data collection into formal research, the task force helps the IUCN strengthen its evidence base while simultaneously fostering environmental literacy among the general public. This collaborative approach ensures that non-professionals are empowered to contribute to high-level conservation goals, bridging the gap between scientific expertise and local community action. Through this scheme, the CEC provides strategic guidance and standardized frameworks to ensure that citizen science projects meet the rigorous data quality requirements of the IUCN. The task force focuses on developing toolkits and best practices that allow organizations to scale their monitoring efforts, ultimately supporting global biodiversity targets. By championing this inclusive model, the initiative highlights how the IUCN and CEC work together to turn public engagement into a powerful, measurable force for protecting the natural world.
